Simon Sinek TED video – Why good leaders make you feel safe

If we get the environment right, each and every one of us has the potential to do remarkable things.

In a recent talk Simon gave at a TED conference in March 2014, he explores the intangible variables of trust, safety and belonging.

Key Points of his presentation:

  • When we feel safe / we belong, we naturally trust and cooperate. There are many things going on outside the organisation that can positively or negatively influence our success.
  • The only variable that we can control is what is going on inside the organisation. That is where leadership matters.
  • The leader sets the tone. When the leader makes the choice to put the safety and lives of the people inside the organisation first, to sacrifice their own comforts, to sacrifice the tangibles results so people feel safe and that they belong, remarkable things happen.
  • When we feel ‘safe’ inside an organisation we naturally combine our talents and strengths to face ‘dangers’ and seize the opportunities. We trust and cooperate.
  • Great leaders are like parents – they want to provide opportunity, education and discipline (when necessary), build self confidence, and give people the opportunity to try and fail, all so they can achieve more than we can imagine for ourselves.
  • Great leaders would never sacrifice the people for the numbers, they would sooner sacrifice the numbers to save the people.
  • Leadership is a choice – not a rank. Leaders look after the people to the left of them, and people to the right of them. ‘This is what a leader is’.
  • We call them leaders because they go first. We call them leaders because they take the risk before anyone else does. We call them leaders because they will choose to sacrifice so that their people are safe and protected and so their people may gain. And when we do, the natural response is that our people will sacrifice for us. They will do what they can to see that the leader’s vision comes to life. And when we ask them, ‘Why would you do that’?  They typically answer the same thing … Because they would have done that for me…

Isn’t that the organisation we would all like to work in?
