The best way to ask for feedback – don’t! Ask for advice!

A key element of our Discovery in Action (Leading People) program involves participants seeking feedback from people they work with about their leadership practice. It is up to them how they go about it; however, we do explore some things to think about when developing their approach. One of the techniques we offer as a suggestion is to use Marshall Goldsmith‘s feedforward approach. We have also come across relatively recent research-based suggestions from both Daniel Pink and Adam Grant to ‘ask for advice, rather than ask for feedback’. This can often work better than asking for feedback because:

  • People love giving advice
  • People don’t love giving feedback
  • It is more likely that you’ll get constructive and actionable tips
